Music tracks that are in WAV format have a very large file size and hence it is not practically possible to send these WAV files by means of email or by downloading them on the internet. The role of MP3 starts here and it compresses the files in WAV format to approximately 10 to 12 times smaller than its original size which is appropriate for downloading as well as to send through the internet. Thus more number of tracks can be stored in the MP3 formatted CDs than the normal audio CDs that is if a normal audio CD can store a maximum of 10 to 12 tracks, the MP3 formatted audio CD can easily store around 100 tracks. MP3 which is a digital audio format was developed for standard MPEG-1 and was later extended to MPEG-2 standard.
